PASSIVHAUS

Passivhaus (or Passive House] is a voluntary energy performance building standard that was developed in Germany in 1991 and the PASSIVE HOUSE INSTITUTE (PHI) was later founded in 1996. The standard has now been adopted around the world and is promoted and administered in the UK by the PASSIVHAUS TRUST. The Passivhaus methodology focuses on the creation of a highly insulated and airtight building envelope and seeks to make efficient use of the sun, internal heat sources, and mechanical ventilation heat recovery in order to ensure excellent indoors thermal comfort, whilst reducing requirements for space heating and cooling and therefore energy consumption.
