The BUILDING RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT ENVIRONMENT ASSESSMENT METHOD (BREEAM) is an international sustainable building standard that was that was launched by the BRE in 1990 and it is now the longest established method of assessing, rating, and certifying the sustainability of buildings. To date over half a million buildings have been certified worldwide in more than 50 countries. When first launched, BREEAM was primarily an assessment method for new office buildings, but over the years the standard has evolved and a number of different versions of the standard have been developed for different types of buildings including version for; New Construction, International New Construction, Refurbishment, In-Use, and Communities. There was a version of BREEAM for new homes called ECO HOMES that was launched 2000, however this was later replaced by the CODE FOR SUSTAINABLE HOMES in 2006, and then in 2015 by the HOME QUALITY MARK which is part of the BREEAM family of schemes rather than being a version of BREEAM itself.
