ACTIVE BUILDINGS

The term ‘Active Buildings’ is used to describe buildings that utilise renewable energy technologies to produce and store energy not only for their own use, but also to supply energy to the wider energy system. ‘Active Buildings’ can be energy self-sufficient, but are not necessarily designed to be. Instead they are to be designed to interact intelligently with local and national grid networks, utilising energy storage and smart controls to import energy from the grid during off-peak times and export to the grid during peak times, thereby reducing grid stress. Where ‘Active Buildings’ export more energy than they import, they can be referred to as ‘Energy Positive Buildings’.
